In this story set in 1915, a family faces celebrating Christmas without their father who is working far away from home, building the New York City subway system. The father`s work is not only backbreaking but also extremely dangerous. Worse yet, his two bosses (nicknamed Mean and Evil by the workers) refuse to let the men have time off for the holiday season. Knowing that he`ll be lonely on Christmas, the family finds a special way to share the holiday spirit with him--and their love brings about a Christmas miracle. Scratchboard illustrations accompany the text which includes a recipe for Mim`s Belly-Hum Jam.
