Twelve-year-old Stanley Melon whose last name and rather large head have earned him the unfortunate nickname Melonhead, faces some serious problems in his home life. His mother is married to a cruel man who abuses Stanley, yet she refuses to leave him. Knowing that Stanley is in danger, Stanley`s mother sends him, unannounced, to stay with his birth father. Stanley`s father, a childish man who is not ready for the responsibility of taking care of his son, lets Stanley know that he is welcome to visit--but only for a short time. Faced with life in either of these two unhappy homes, Stanley finds a third option--traveling by bus across the country and finding his own way in the world.
