The story of a woman named Phillipa (Rigg) and her quest for love in the sequestered world of the Benedictine nuns at Brede Abbey. She becomes involved in relationships with two women: one a young and confused novice, and the other an older and frigid conservative. Phillipa comes to the conclusion that both women can be loved equally. Based on the novel by Rumer Godden and filmed on location in Irish and English convents.
